Why I Love IntelliJ for Coding Java

How-To Geek, Thursday, August 28th, 2025

If you've spent any time coding in Java, you know the IDE you choose can make or break your workflow. Over the years, I've tried just about every major Java IDE and editor out there. They all have their strengths, but for me, one stands head and shoulders above the rest. It's IntelliJ IDEA.

When people ask me why I prefer IntelliJ IDEA for Java development, my answer usually comes down to one thing: it feels like an IDE built for professionals. IntelliJ doesn't just help you write code. It actively helps you develop software in the most efficient, reliable, and enjoyable way possible.

IntelliJ emerged at a time when programmers were spending more time struggling with their IDEs than actually creating software. It had some robust features. Code analysis, error highlighting, smart suggestions, and most importantly, uncontested project refactoring features. As a result? Developer productivity soared. It made Java coding fun again.
