Nextcloud CEO: Open Source Moves From 'a Nerdy Audience' to the Geopolitical Stage
Computerworld, Monday, June 15th, 2026
Nextcloud's CEO says open source has shifted from a niche technical interest to a strategic geopolitical priority in Europe.
Frank Karlitschek, CEO of German open-source company Nextcloud, describes a fundamental shift in how organizations view digital sovereignty and technology independence. Once a technical concern for developers, open-source alternatives to proprietary platforms have become central to European policy amid trade tensions and data security concerns.
Nextcloud recently helped develop Euro-Office, an open-source productivity suite, as the company posts 50-100% annual revenue growth. Karlitschek notes that while interest in sovereign technology is strong, actual migration from US cloud providers remains exploratory. He sees the EU's Tech Sovereignty Package as progress, but says turning it into binding legislation is the real challenge ahead.
