Xiaomi releases MiMo Code, an MIT-licensed open source terminal coding agent rivaling Claude Code.
Joab Jackson reports that Xiaomi has released MiMo Code, an MIT-licensed open source terminal-based coding assistant positioned as a rival to Claude Code. Unlike Claude Code, MiMo Code is not tied to a single proprietary environment or LLM provider, is free, and may not require a cloud provider if a model is installed locally.
It is optimized for long-horizon automated programming tasks, aiming to maintain decision quality and state continuity over dozens or hundreds of execution steps, and reportedly outperformed Claude Code on three repository-level benchmarks. Since its v0.1 release it has gathered around 9,000 GitHub stars and 783 forks.
A cited video review concludes MiMo Code is best for prototyping and learning, while Claude Code remains better for production work where its safety guardrails justify the $20 monthly fee.
